Scalloped Potatoes Au Gratin
Layers of thinly sliced potatoes in a creamy cheese sauce, baked until golden
By RecipesQueen Kitchen • June 10, 2026
Scalloped potatoes are the most luxurious potato side dish — paper-thin slices layered with a silky Gruyère cream sauce and baked until the top is golden and the potatoes are meltingly tender.
Slice the potatoes uniformly thin (1/8 inch) — a mandoline makes this easy. The thinner the slices, the creamier the result.
Let rest 15 minutes before serving so the sauce thickens slightly.
Ingredients
- 3 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes, thinly sliced
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
Instructions
- 1
Heat cream with garlic, nutmeg, salt, and pepper until steaming.
- 2
Layer potatoes in a buttered baking dish, overlapping slightly.
- 3
After each layer, drizzle with cream mixture and sprinkle with cheese.
- 4
Repeat layers. Pour remaining cream over the top. Top with remaining cheese.
- 5
Cover with foil. Bake at 375°F for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake 15 more minutes until golden.
- 6
Rest 15 minutes before serving.
