Tuna noodle casserole is the quintessential American comfort food — egg noodles and tuna folded into a creamy mushroom sauce with peas, topped with buttery breadcrumbs baked until golden.

Make the cream sauce from scratch instead of using canned soup — mushrooms, butter, flour, and milk create a far superior base.

The crispy buttered breadcrumb topping is non-negotiable.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz egg noodles
  • 2 cans (5 oz) tuna, drained
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp melted butter (for topping)

Instructions

  1. 1

    Cook noodles al dente. Drain.

  2. 2

Sauté mushrooms in butter until golden. Add flour, cook 1 minute. Whisk in milk until thick.

  3. 3

Stir in cheese, tuna, peas, and noodles. Pour into a greased baking dish.

  4. 4

Toss panko with melted butter. Sprinkle over the top.

  5. 5

Bake at 375°F for 20-25 minutes until golden and bubbly.
