Shakshuka is a skillet of magic — eggs gently poached in a spiced tomato sauce flavored with cumin, paprika, and chili. It's one of the simplest, most satisfying brunch dishes.

The sauce is everything. Onions, garlic, and peppers soften before crushed tomatoes and spices transform into a rich, aromatic base.

Scoop with warm pita bread or crusty sourdough. Crumble feta on top for a salty, creamy contrast.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp chili flakes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup crumbled feta
  • 2 tbsp fresh cilantro

Instructions

  1. 1

Heat olive oil in a large skillet. Sauté onion and bell pepper 5 minutes.

  2. 2

Add garlic, cumin, paprika, and chili flakes. Cook 1 minute.

  3. 3

Pour in crushed tomatoes. Simmer 10 minutes until thickened.

  4. 4

Make 6 wells in the sauce. Crack an egg into each well.

  5. 5

Cover and cook 6-8 minutes until whites are set but yolks are runny.

  6. 6

Top with feta and cilantro. Serve straight from the skillet with warm bread.
