Chunks of beef slowly braised in a deeply flavored paprika sauce with onions and caraway, served with fluffy bread dumplings that soak up every drop of the rich gravy. This Hungarian-inspired German comfort food is a cold-weather staple.

Ingredients

  • 2 lb beef chuck, cubed
  • 3 large onions, diced
  • 3 tbsp sweet Hungarian paprika
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • salt and pepper

Instructions

    Brown beef cubes in batches in hot oil. Set aside.

    Sauté diced onions until soft and golden. Add paprika, caraway, and tomato paste. Cook 1 minute.

    Return beef, add broth and bell pepper. Simmer covered for 2 hours until beef is tender.
