Käsespätzle — German Mac and Cheese

Germany's answer to mac and cheese — layers of soft Spätzle noodles with melted Emmentaler and Gruyère, topped with crispy fried onions.

Ingredients

  • 1 batch fresh Spätzle (see recipe)
  • 2 cups shredded Emmentaler cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère
  • 2 onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • salt and pepper

Instructions

    Fry sliced onions in butter over medium heat until deeply golden and crispy, about 15 minutes.

    In a baking dish, layer Spätzle and cheese, ending with cheese on top.

    Bake at 200°C for 15 minutes until bubbly and golden.

    Top with crispy fried onions and serve immediately.
