Best Homemade Guacamole
Chunky, perfectly seasoned guacamole with ripe avocados, lime, and cilantro
By RecipesQueen Kitchen • June 10, 2026
This is the guacamole recipe that ruins restaurant guacamole for you forever — because once you taste how good fresh, homemade guacamole can be, there's no going back. Ripe avocados, a squeeze of lime, a pinch of salt, and a few key additions create something magical.
The texture is everything: mash some of the avocado for the creamy base, but leave large chunks for satisfying bites. Fresh jalapeño brings heat, red onion adds sharpness, and cilantro ties everything together with its bright, herbaceous punch.
The single most important factor is using perfectly ripe avocados — they should give slightly when pressed. Too firm and the flavor won't be there; too soft and you'll get brown, mushy guac. Serve immediately with warm tortilla chips, or press plastic wrap directly onto the surface to prevent browning.
Ingredients
- 3 large ripe Hass avocados
- 2 tbsp fresh lime juice (about 1 lime)
- 1/2 small red onion, finely diced
- 1 small jalapeño, seeded and minced
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
- 1 small Roma tomato, diced (optional)
- 1/2 tsp kosher salt
- 1 pinch ground cumin
Instructions
- 1
Halve avocados, remove pits, and scoop the flesh into a bowl. Add lime juice immediately to prevent browning.
- 2
Mash with a fork to your preferred texture — mostly smooth with some chunks remaining for the best texture.
- 3
Fold in diced red onion, minced jalapeño, and cilantro.
- 4
If using tomato, gently fold it in — be careful not to over-stir or it will get watery.
- 5
Season with salt and a pinch of cumin. Taste and adjust lime and salt.
- 6
Serve immediately with tortilla chips. To store, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface and refrigerate for up to 1 day.
