Homemade Taco Seasoning
Bold, customizable taco seasoning with pantry spices — better than store-bought
By RecipesQueen Kitchen • June 10, 2026
Once you make homemade taco seasoning, you'll never go back to those little packets. This blend of chili powder, cumin, garlic, and smoked paprika is bolder, fresher, and more flavorful — and you probably already have everything in your pantry.
No mystery fillers, no maltodextrin, no excess sodium. Just pure spice flavor that you can customize to your taste. Want it smokier? Add more paprika. Hotter? Double the cayenne. It takes 5 minutes to mix and stores for months.
Use it for taco meat, of course, but also for seasoning rice, roasted vegetables, popcorn, eggs, soups, and grilled chicken. One batch makes enough for about 8 taco nights. Mix up a big batch and keep it in a jar by the stove.
Ingredients
- 3 tbsp chili powder
- 2 tbsp ground cumin
- 1 tbsp smoked paprika
- 1 tbsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
Instructions
- 1
Combine all spices in a small bowl or jar and whisk (or shake) until evenly blended.
- 2
Store in an airtight container or mason jar at room temperature for up to 6 months.
- 3
To use for tacos: brown 1 pound of ground meat, drain excess fat. Add 2-3 tablespoons of seasoning mix and 1/3 cup water.
- 4
Simmer the seasoned meat for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and coats the meat.
- 5
Taste and adjust — add more seasoning for bolder flavor, or a pinch of sugar to balance the heat.
- 6
Serve in taco shells, burrito wraps, over rice, or on nachos. This blend also works as a dry rub for grilled chicken.
