Classic Shepherds Pie
Savory lamb filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes, baked until golden
By RecipesQueen Kitchen • June 10, 2026
Shepherd's pie is the ultimate British comfort food — a savory filling of tender ground lamb with peas, carrots, and onions in a rich gravy, topped with a thick layer of buttery mashed potatoes baked until the peaks turn golden.
The filling should be saucy but not soupy — the gravy thickens as it bakes under the potato blanket.
Let it rest 10 minutes so the filling sets slightly. Serve with a simple green salad.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs ground lamb
- 1 large onion, diced
- 2 large carrots, diced
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 cup beef broth
- 2 tbsp flour
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 3 lbs russet potatoes, cubed
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 cup cream
- 1 tsp salt
Instructions
- 1
Boil potatoes until tender. Mash with butter, cream, and salt. Set aside.
- 2
Brown lamb in a large skillet, breaking up. Drain excess fat.
- 3
Add onion and carrots. Cook 5 minutes. Stir in tomato paste and flour.
- 4
Add broth and Worcestershire. Simmer until thickened. Stir in peas.
- 5
Pour filling into a 9x13 baking dish. Spread mashed potatoes on top, creating peaks with a fork.
- 6
Bake at 400°F for 25-30 minutes until potatoes are golden. Rest 10 minutes before serving.
